Me Or Her

“Me or her?” Dia asked Abhay.

“What kind of question is that? I can't choose.” he said taken aback by her question.

“Yeah, I know that. But just think about whom you love more and you'll get your answer.” Diya replied.

Abhay was shocked and surprised to hear her ask this question. He had never thought that his fiancee would be anything like this. But today, when she asked him this question, he had no clue as to how to answer her.

“Abhay!” Diya snapped her fingers in front of his face effectively bringing him out of his daze. “What I mean to ask is, if you were to choose one among us, without either of us being right or wrong, whom would you choose?”

“Diya, I can't choose between the both of you. I love you both equally. You're my fiancee and we're going to get married soon. So I definitely do love you.” he replied. “But on the other hand she is my mother, the woman who gave birth to me and raised me to become the person I am today. I can't choose between the two of you.”

“Abhay, I'm not literally making you choose. We're playing 20 questions, remember? This is just an imaginary situation. Common Abhay just choose, please!” she pleaded.

“Okay. I… alright. If such a situation were to arise, I'd choose my mother.” he replied tightly shutting his eyes and continued, “Look, I love you but my mother's my mother. I just love her more. I'm sorry.”

It was eerily quiet for some time and he peeked open his eyes to see her reaction. But instead of getting angry like Abhay had expected her to, Diya was laughing at him looking amused.

“You thought I was going to get angry at you? How cute!” she pinched his cheeks making him go red. “I would have gotten angry if you had chosen me. You see, this was not only just another one of the 20 questions but also a question to assure me that I'd be marrying the right person.”

“Wait! So you mean if I'd chosen you you'd have called off our wedding?” he asked shocked.

“I don't know. I didn't think about it. I guess, I kinda already knew that you would choose your mother.” she shrugged.

“But I still don't get your logic. Any other woman would have wanted me to choose them over every other person. But you...” he trailed off unsure how to put his feelings in words.

“The logic is simple really. If you would have chosen me than your mother, the woman who loved you for all these years, then it would mean that in future you could get over me as easily too. Plus, your mother favours me over you so if you're choosing her, you're choosing me indirectly.” she smiled cheekily to which Abhay could only chuckle and thank the gods for giving him such a special life partner.
